It is very simple. Just like the female student who presented a talk in an underwear in front of her class for the reason that professor commented about the size of her shorts, and this news gained all kinds of attention across all kinds of media, may be, the researcher could do the same for SM attention. Fortunately or unfortunately for the professor, and the class, the professor did not say that he couldn't see the shorts. Think about what could have happened.
By the way, how appropriate was this action of the student, and how appropriate was professor's comment on student's shorts?
Jokes apart, when it comes to my perspective on this particular incident at Cornell, it is difficult to say without knowing all the facts. Though it certainly was a bold move from the student to express her perspective for reasons cited in the below article, and shows her individuality, such actions could be perceived differently across the globe based on culture, exposure and experience. In the grand scheme of things, such actions could be exploited by certain observers at the expense of the individual and the professor. It would be advisable to show some restrain and patience, while handling such situations. Coming from someone, who had my share of tough experiences.
With respect to the below post, my personal perspective would be to focus on the quality of work, set yourself apart, and you will get all the attention over time that you are looking for and/or your perception of recognition/attention would change with better experience.
Remember, when someone becomes the cynosure of everyone's eyes, it has its own challenges. That is when the real challenge comes, managing and continuing to excel with what one does, while also addressing publicity of all sorts from all channels. You would notice people who had nothing to do with you before starting to claim and/or associate with all credits that you are receiving for where you have reached. During that time, please remember who were with you during tough times, and helped you succeed the right way.
